This Is Leipzig: A City Like No Other for a Club Like No Other

Culture, nature and, of course, football! Explore the home of the Red Bulls.

Our hometown is one of great names, with a rich history, and high-quality football. Located in Germany’s eastern province of Saxony, the German “Little Venice” is one of the cities that has witnessed many great historical moments.

Some of the greatest names in music, the most important events, and a buzzing culture scene have always put Leipzig at the forefront. Now, with the Red Bulls, the Trade Fair City also has a firm footing in Germany’s top football division, the Bundesliga.

This is Leipzig

A Hub for Music, Culture, and Art

The fact that Leipzig lies in what used to be the crossroads of two of the main medieval trade routes, means we have been in touch with the outside world and diverse cultures since early in our history. The openness of the city, its enthusiasm for music and art, as well as a demographic boom, has set the stage for a busy, creative hub to develop.

This however is something that has been the trademark of Leipzig all along: It was here that some of the most recognized names in music history set up quarters. Richard Wagner was born here, while Bach, Mendelssohn Bartholdy, the Schumanns, and Mahler also made their names as citizens of the Trade Fair City.

The city’s landmarks reflect this well: from the Saint Thomas Church, where Johann Sebastian Bach served as its cantor, to the Spinnerei (a former cotton mill turned into an ambitious art complex), we’re well served with options to delve deep into the culture scene.

Other ‘must-see’ sights include the Museum of Fine Arts, the Gewandhaus -home of the Gewandhaus Orchestra-, and the Leipzig Opera House, the oldest opera house in Germany.

In Contact with Nature

The nickname of Little Venice comes from the extensive amount of canals that crisscross Leipzig, setting the tone of a city intertwined with its parks, environment, and highly appreciated life quality.

Leipzig has consistently ranked as one of the two best cities to live in Germany in studies conducted by consumer portals, social statistics institutes, research institutes, and private studies, taking into account urbanism, stress levels, gastronomy, student life quality, and overall liveability.

Flanked on all sides by large parks, some of the most beloved by Leipzigers are the Leipzig Riverside Forest (Leipziger Auwald), the Botanical Garden, and the Clara Zetkin Park, thanks to their lawns, ponds, wooded areas, and landscapes.

No trip to our city is complete without the Leipzig Zoo, home to over 850 species in 27 hectares, making this zoo one of the most important centers for conservation and biodiversity.

East Germany’s Football Capital

Leipzig is where the German Football Federation (DFB) was founded 124 years ago, in 1900, and since then it has been an important place in the footballing map. The first German Champion in 1903 was VfB Leipzig and another Leipzig club, Lokomotive, made it to the final of the UEFA Cup Winners’ Cup in 1987.

Since 2009, the footballing legacy of Leipzig has been secured in the hands of the Red Bulls, who have led an astonishing rise to the Bundesliga, gained access to European tournaments, secured three titles in the last three seasons, and established themselves as a permanent competitor to bring home the Bundesliga title.

RB Leipzig, 15 years of achieving greatness

In one of the most remarkable stories German football has seen in recent decades, we have climbed from the lower divisions to the pinnacle of Europe. With four promotions in seven years, we reached the Bundesliga in 2016, where we have qualified seven times for the Champions League.

The great form shown domestically was replicated internationally as well, having reached the semi-finals of Europe’s two biggest tournaments: the Champions League (2020) and the Europa League (2022).

Our Philosophy, our way of doing things

As soon as RB Leipzig jumps onto the pitch, you know what to expect: Dynamic, attractive, offensive football, delivered by some of the most promising young players football has to offer. With the development of new talents as one of our main priorities, the RB Leipzig Football Academy in Cottaweg has delivered a steady stream of an evergrowing list of fan-favorite players.

Our goal is to inspire, entertain, and motivate. We embody the open spirit of our hometown, the city of Leipzig, and strive to live up to our potential on and off the pitch.

Back-to-back Cups

We have fond memories of the Olympic Stadium in Berlin, where we secured two DFB Pokal wins in succession. The first one, in 2022, was dramatic, going all the way to the penalty kicks against SC Freiburg. The hard-fought game ended with a 4-2 win for us.

The next season, on Jun 3, 2023, we reached the second final in a row, this time beating Eintracht Frankfurt 2-0 to clinch our second trophy since playing in the First Bundesliga.

From Cups to a Supercup

At the start of the 2023/24 season, on August 12, 2023, we had a performance to remember that led to us lifting our first German Supercup, defeating the defending Bundesliga champions, FC Bayern Munich with a convincing 3-0 win.
