Christoph Baumgartner scores in Austria's win over Germany

An overview of how RBL's players are faring during the November international break

It's now or never - which RBL players are heading to next year's European Championships?

  • Our Austrian trio of Xaver Schlager, Christoph Baumgartner and Nicolas Seiwald beat Germany 2-0 in a friendly in Vienna on Tuesday. The boys have already secured their spot at EURO 2024.

Our former captain Marcel Sabitzer (now at Borussia Dortmund) gave the Austrians a deserved lead before half-time through a clinical right-footed strike from the left edge of the penalty area (29'). The Austrian boys under head coach Ralf Rangnick held onto their lead after the break, which was helped by a numerical advantage following a red card for Leroy Sané (49').

After his teammate was sent off, Benny Henrichs was substituted on for Germany, but he was unable to prevent fellow RB Leipzig player Christoph Baumgartner from scoring the hosts' second (73'). The game ended in a 2-0 victory for Austria.

Neither David Raum nor Janis Blaswich made an appearance for Julian Nagelsmann's side in the friendly. Xaver Schlager wore the captain's armband in the final stages of the game for the first time in his career - congratulations, Xaver!

  • After Denmark secured their place at EURO 2024 with a 2-1 win over second-placed Slovenia earlier this week, Benjamin Sesko and Co. required a point from their clash with Kazakhstan on Monday night to book their spot for next year's tournament in Germany. Our number 30 opened the scoring for his country from the spot as Slovenia defeated Kazakhstan 2-1 to qualify for their first European Championships in 24 years. It was Sesko's fifth goal in nine qualifying games, which made him Slovenia's top scorer.

Denmark fell to a 2-0 defeat against Northern Ireland in their final qualifying game. Yussi Poulsen came on in the 56th minute of the loss.
Benny Henrichs was in action for Germany against Austria.
  • Belgium pipped Austria to first place in Group F thanks to an imperious 5-0 win over Azerbaijan. Lois Openda replaced Roma striker Romelu Lukaku, who scored four goals in 37 minutes for the Red Devils, at the start of the second half. The win means that Belgium finish on 20 points, one ahead of second-placed Austria.

  • Emil Forsberg's Sweden could only finish directly behind Belgium and Austria in Group F, but they still put in a strong performance in their final qualifying game, which was also head coach Janne Andersson's last game in charge of the "Tre Kronor".

In his 86th appearance for Sweden, Emil curled home beautifully to double his country's lead over Estonia in the 55th minute. Viktor Claesson's delicate backheel assist was the icing on the cake.

  • The Netherlands won 1-0 in a tight game against the Republic of Ireland, but the point means that Xavi and Co. have qualified automatically for next year's Euros. Xavi started the game and was replaced in the 80th minute by Donyell Malen.

Xavi was brought on in the 63rd minute of the 6-0 win against Gibraltar.

  • Hungary left it late to draw 2-2 with Bulgaria, but the point means that Peter Gulacsi, Willi Orban and Co. will be playing in next year's European Championships! Hungary capped their qualifying campaign off in style with a 3-1 win over Montenegro on Sunday.

Former RBL player Dominik Szoboszlai (now at Liverpool) was instrumental in the win, scoring a quickfire brace to put Hungary into the lead.

Peter, who was named in the squad by Hungary head coach Marco Rossi after recovering from injury, wasn't involved in either game, while Willi is continuing to work on his comeback from a knee injury back in Leipzig.

RBL duo have 2026 World Cup in their sights

  • For Amadou Haidara and Ilaix Moriba, the main priority is qualification for the 2026 World Cup in the USA, Mexico and Canada. Doudou and Mali were victorious over Chad (3-1) and drew 1-1 against the Central African Republic on Tuesday.

Ilaix and the Guinea national team defeated Uganda 2-1 and were defeated 1-0 by Botswana on Tuesday.
