Vision Zero Waste: Red Bull Arena Leipzig award

Vision Zero Waste: Red Bull Arena Receives Award

RB Leipzig and PreZero achieve sustainability target | Recycling rate in the stadium increased significantly| Joint success of club, partners, service providers and fans | Commitment to be further expanded

Another title for RB Leipzig!

The Red Bull Arena has been awarded by TÜV Süd for its operational waste and recyclables management. Our home ground received the bronze certificate according to DIN SPEC 91436 Zero Waste from the independent testing organization.

RB Leipzig set certification before UEFA EURO 2024 as its goal when it presented its first sustainability report in spring 2023. In cooperation with the official supplier PreZero, it has now succeeded in turning this goal into reality and reaching the next milestone in its sustainability commitment.

Since 2022, RB Leipzig and PreZero have been working to raise resource awareness to a new level and significantly increase the recycling rate in the stadium. With success: over 85 percent of the waste generated on the Red Bull Arena site is now recycled or reused. This rate has more than doubled since 2019.

Ulrich Wolter, Chief Relationship Officer RB Leipzig

  • "The certification of Red Bull Arena is a great success and proof of great teamwork. With the support of PreZero, together with our caterers, partners, service providers, employees and, above all, our fans, we have significantly increased the recycling rate in the stadium. We are proud of this, but we will not rest on our laurels and already have our sights set on the next goals."

Marcus Sagitz, Head of Marketing International PreZero

  • "We are delighted to have reached this milestone together with our partner RB Leipzig before EURO 2024. This shows that resource efficiency can be planned to a certain extent if it is approached holistically. In the future, we will continue to work hand in hand on the path of transformation in European professional football and set new milestones as pioneers in the field of sustainability."

RBL fans play a major role

The basis for this success was initially the analysis and evaluation of the waste generated in the Red Bull Arena and the establishment of a coordinated recyclable materials and waste management system.

The club's commitment to the environment has also become increasingly visible for RBL fans. Only reusable cups are used throughout the Red Bull Arena (public & VIP catering). In addition, since April 2023, fans have been able to dispose of all stadium waste such as snack bowls, napkins or fan merchandise packaging separately. Appropriate separation instructions and further awareness-raising information can also be found throughout the stadium.

No reason to rest

The certification of the Red Bull Arena represents an important milestone in the development of RB Leipzig and the sustainable orientation of the club. The measures that have been initiated will now be continuously pursued and the fans will continue to be closely involved. There are also plans to transfer waste and recyclables management entirely to the RBL Academy and office.

This is the vision behind Zero Waste

The vision of “Zero Waste” is not about making waste disappear overnight. It is about seeing it as a valuable material – and therefore as a valuable resource that must not be wasted but must be sensibly recycled.

The term “zero waste” therefore stands much more for the responsible use of resources than for doing without everything.
