Benjamin Šeško scored twice for RBL against Wiesbaden

Šeško brace! RBL win 3-2 in Wiesbaden

RBL edge past SV Wehen Wiesbaden | Bundesliga 2 team make things difficult for Leipzig | Péter Gulácsi tested multiple times in comeback game

Through to the second round!

RB Leipzig edged past second-tier side SV Wehen Wiesbaden 3-2 in the first round of the DFB-Pokal.

RBL started the game with a bang, with Emil Forsberg putting us into the lead in the 7th minute. Benjamin Šeško pounced on a defensive error from the hosts to put us 2-0 up 11 minutes later. Wiesbaden didn't give up that easily, however. Shortly before half-time, Ivan Prtajin latched onto a long ball and chipped Péter Gulácsi to get one back for the hosts (41').

The second-division side raced out of the blocks at the start of the second half, with Prtajin forcing Gulácsi to make another save in the 61st minute. Marco Rose made three substitutions four minutes later, bringing Xaver Schlager, Xavi Simons, and Loïs Openda on.

The latter two were instrumental in setting up Leipzig's third goal. They were running the show before Šeško followed up Forsberg's saved shot to score his second. Almost instantly, the hosts went down the other end and reduced the margin to one goal again after Prtajin scored from a corner in the 73rd minute. The game was cagey up until the final whistle, but RBL managed to hold onto their lead and advance to the second round.

7th minute: Forsberg makes it 1-0!

It didn’t take us long to break the deadlock: Lenz crosses in from the left and Poulsen meets it well with a powerful header. Stritzel manages to make the initial save, but the ball drops to Forsberg’s feet and he coolly strokes the ball into the top left corner.

14th minute: Gulácsi makes a top save

Wehen Wiesbaden pose a threat to Gulácsi’s goal for the first time. Lee shoots from the left side of the penalty area, but the Hungarian gets down well – a great first bit of work from Péte on his return to the side.

18th minute: Šeško doubles our lead!

A mistake at the back from our opponents plays a big role in our second goal: Carvalho chips the ball into the penalty area and Mathisen tries to head it away, but his attempted clearance lands at Šeško's feet. The Slovenian makes no mistake and makes it 2-0 to RBL. We're right on course to progress to the second round.

30th minute: Well defended

Wehen Wiesbaden manage to launch a counter attack, but our defence is alert and we escape unscathed following a flurry of Wiesbaden shots.

41st minute: Wehen get a goal back

A long ball over the top of the back line finds Prtajin, who shrugs off Seiwald and lobs the ball over Gulácsi to get a goal back for Wehen.

45th minute: Big chance for RBL!

Carvalho almost makes it 3-1! Castello Jr. puts Fabio through on goal, but his effort on goal is saved by Wehen's keeper Stritzel.

61st minute: A tight contest

The hosts look to be the better side in the second half, encouraged by their goal, but RBL continue to pose a threat and are playing patient football. Carvalho’s effort from the edge of the penalty area lands directly in Stritzel's arms. At the other end of the pitch, Gulácsi is forced into a save by Prtajin.

65th minute: Fresh legs

Our head coach Marco Rose makes three changes: Xaver Schlager, Xavi Simons and Loïs Openda come on in attempt to regain the control of the game.

70th minute: ŠEŠKOOOOOOO!

That’s exactly what we needed! Openda and Xavi get an attack going which results in Forsberg’s shot being blocked, only for the ball fall to Šeško, who smashes into the top left corner of the goal to make it 3-1.

73rd minute: Prtajin again

Wehen Wiesbaden get another goal back. This time it’s from a corner; Gulácsi makes the initial save from Prtajin’s header, but the striker scores the follow-up. It’s now only 3-2 to RBL.

80th minute: Off the bar!

Xavi takes the reins and plays a perfectly timed pass to Šeško. The big man turns and fires off a shot which crashes against the woodwork!

88th minute: Gulácsi called into action again

The second-tier side are throwing everything at us. Gulásci flies across the goal and parries a shot from range away from the bottom corner to get us over the line.
