Goalless draw against Bochum

Xavi misses penalty in the first half | Forsberg also denied from the spot | RBL have second-half chances | First game without an RBL goal this season

A stalemate on matchday 7!

Takuma Asano had the first chance for the visitors after only a few seconds, but his shot posed no problem for Janis Blaswich. RBL took control of the game after that and pinned Bochum in their own half. Lois Openda went to ground in the opposition box in the 16th minute, but Keven Schlotterbeck's challenge wasn't judged to be a foul. Things were different ten minutes later, however, as the referee awarded a penalty following a foul on Xavi, but Manuel Riemann was equal to our number 20's effort from the spot. Bochum had another chance in the 35th minute after Asano latched onto a flick-on, but Castello Jr. did just enough to put the Japanese international off his stride.

VfL looked to get on the attack more after the break, with Kevin Stöger's free-kick going narrowly wide in the 48th minute. Both teams looked a bit rudderless up until the 61st minute. Substitute Yussuf Poulsen was bundled over in the box, but Emil Forsberg missed the chance to put Leipzig into the lead from 12 yards out once again. RBL turned up the heat and had some more good chances through Openda (71') and Poulsen (77'), but our boys just couldn't find a winner.

1'

First chance for the visitors

Bochum get forward straight away and are looking lively down the right-hand side. Kevin Stöger plays Takuma Asano through, but his shot is straight at Janis Blaswich.

12'

RBL controlling the game

We’ve got a lot more possession and most of the ball is being played in Bochum’s half. The only thing that’s missing is the final ball. Bochum have been flying into challenges. We’ve had a few free kicks, but they’ve posed no danger

16'

Shouts for a penalty

Lois Openda goes to ground in the box after a tackle from Keven Schlotterbeck, but the defender’s challenge is given the all-clear.

24'

Patience is a virtue

Leipzig keep on pushing but Bochum won’t budge. The visitors are especially switched-on when the ball’s in the air. We’re trying to make the space for good shooting opportunities.

26'

RBL penalty, but Xavi misses

Xavi is tripped in the opposition box and the referee points to the spot. However, Manuel Riemann guesses correctly and parries the Dutchman’s penalty away.

35'

Bochum’s best chance of the half

VfL flick the ball on with midfield and it loops over Castello Jr. and into the path of Asano. He’s almost through on goal, but the Frenchman catches up to him and puts the attacker off enough for his shot to go wide.

43'

Klostermann from range

Lukas Klostermann picks up the ball on the edge of the D after an RBL corner and lets fly, but he doesn’t put enough power behind it. Riemann makes the save comfortably.

48'

Free-kick from Stöger

Kevin Stöger steps up to take a free-kick and tries his luck from 30 yards out. It goes narrowly past the post, but Janis had it covered.

58'

Bochum growing into the game

VfL are looking more and more energetic and are trying to get the ball forward. RBL come down the wings every now and then, but the final pass is still lacking.

62'

Second penalty and second miss for Leipzig

Unbelievable. Substitute Yussuf Poulsen is fouled in the box and another penalty is awarded. This time, it’s Emil Forsberg who steps up, but Riemann is there once again to deny Leipzig once again.

70'

Chance for Openda

Kevin Kampl bears down on the Bochum box and lays the ball off to Mo Simakan. The defender gives the ball to Openda, who gets a shot off immediately, but it's wayward from the Belgian.

76'

Poulsen goes close with a header

Leipzig turn up the heat again! Kampl’s cross finds Yussuf Poulsen, but another brilliant save from Riemann keeps things level.

83'

Leipzig look fired up

We want the winning goal, but it won’t come without a fight. Bochum look to be running out of steam, which means a goal is not out of the equation just yet.
