Another UCL Place for the Bundesliga?
The Champions League will have a new structure from the 2024/25 season. As a result, the two countries whose clubs have performed best in the current UCL season will each receive an additional place.
The basis for this is the UEFA season ranking of the participating nations. This is currently led by Italy; Germany is in second place, ahead of England, overtaking them after Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund both made it through to the Champions League semi-finals while Arsenal and Manchester City went out.
England are down to one team in Europe after Liverpool and West Ham both losi in the Europa League, the latter to Bayer Leverkusen. Aston Villa (Conference League) are their last team standing. Three teams can still score points for the Bundesliga: Bayern, Dortmund (both UCL) and Leverkusen (Europa League).
For Germany, four points are enough to secure fifth place (two wins or four draws). Every point lost by England and France plays into the Bundesliga's hands.
UEFA season rankings
How does the point scoring work?
Every win gives two points, every draw one point, and every stage progression earns another point. All points earned are then divided by the number of clubs from a country that competed in European competition. Germany started with seven teams, so each point earned is worth 0.143 points in the rankings.
