Yussuf Poulsen's 10-season scoring run for RBL

Longest-serving player at RBL | 69 league goals in 270 appearances for the Bulls | 15 Bundesliga goals and first hat-trick for RBL in 2018/19

Prior to matchday 17, a total of 13 players had gotten on the scoresheet for RB Leipzig in the Bundesliga. One name that was noticeable missing from the list ahead of the away game at FC Schalke 04 on 24th January was Yussuf Poulsen.

The striker came off the bench in the 89th minute to wrap up a 6-1 win against the Royal Blues, netting his first goal this season. He also became Leipzig’s record goalscorer from the bench, having scored seven goals as a substitute.

10 years, 10 goals: Interview with Yussuf Poulsen

Interview with RBL's Yussuf Poulsen

The Dane, who has been sidelined with injuries in the past, had to wait a while to celebrate his first goal of the season. Our longest-serving player has been at the club since 2013 and has been a key figure in the team in that time due to his mentality, grit and quality in front of goal. Poulsen has found the back of the net in each of his 10 seasons as a Red Bull.

From playing in the 3. Liga to the Bundesliga in just a few years, we take a look back on Yussi’s first league goals in each of his seasons at RB Leipzig.

24th August 2013: RB Leipzig – Rot-Weiß Erfurt 2-0

Matchday 5 nearly 10 years ago saw our (at the time) new signing from Lyngby find the back of the net in a special game for the club. Poulsen scored a brace in the Ost Derby against Rot-Weiß Erfurt to give us our first home win in the third division in 2013/14 – his first two goals for our club!

10th August 2014: 1860 München vs. RB Leipzig 0-3

Following our promotion in 2014, Yussi scored our first goal in the second division against 1860 Munich. The Dane netted the opening goal on matchday 2 at the Allianz Arena in the 39th minute, with Dominik Kaiser getting the assist. His goal put the Bulls on course for a 3-0 win – our first victory in the division!

6th December 2015: RB Leipzig vs. MSV Duisburg 4-2

Poulsen needed a bit longer to score his first goal of the 2015/16 season. He netted an important equaliser against Duisburg on the final matchday of the first half of the season (1-1). He then scored a second in the closing minutes to wrap up a 4-2 win for RBL.

30th September 2016: RB Leipzig vs. FC Augsburg 2-1

Three years after Poulsen’s move to Leipzig, we won promotion to the Bundesliga. Our striker didn’t need long to find his footing in the top flight, scoring the winner on matchday 6 against Augsburg (2-1).

1st October 2017: 1. FC Köln vs. RB Leipzig 1-2

Yussi’s first league goal in 2017/18 once again helped the Bulls to three points, this time in Cologne. His header in the 80th minute made it 2-0 for RBL on matchday 7.

15th September 2018: RB Leipzig vs. Hannover 96 3-2

Our striker’s most prolific season in our colours was in 2018/19, as he scored 15 goals in 31 Bundesliga games. His first came in a 3-2 home win against Hannover on matchday 3, while RBL went on to win all eight games that he scored in that season.

Poulsen wrote his name into the RBL history books on matchday 27, as he scored our first ever top-flight hat-trick in a 5-0 win against Hertha BSC.

25th August 2019: RB Leipzig vs. Eintracht Frankfurt 2-1

Yussi’s first goal in 2019/20 came on matchday 2 against Frankfurt (made it 2-0, 80‘). The Eagles were able to get a goal back, but once again the Dane was the match-winner for RBL.

20th September 2020: RB Leipzig vs. Mainz 05 3-1

The striker’s first goal in 2020/21 came on the opening weekend, as he made it 2-0 at home against Mainz.

25th September 2021: RB Leipzig vs. Hertha BSC Berlin 6-0

The Dane was forced to wait until matchday 6 last term for his first goal of the season. He netted once in a 6-0 domination of Hertha to open his account.

24th January 2022: Schalke 04 vs. RB Leipzig 1-6

Poulsen’s scoring streak continued, as he found the back of the net in his 10th straight season for RBL in a 6-1 victory over Schalke on 24th January.
