RBL defeat Schalke 6-1

Dominant performance from the Red Bulls | André Silva, Benny Henrichs, Timo Werner, Dani Olmo and Yussuf Poulsen among the goals | Kozuki scores for Schalke

RB Leipzig rounded off the first half of the season with a win. Away in Gelsenkirchen on matchday 17, Marco Rose’s side delivered a dominant performance to beat Schalke 6-1 thanks to goals from André Silva, Benny Henrichs, Timo Werner, Dani Olmo and Yussuf Poulsen.

Rose’s side enjoyed a brilliant start to the game and were ahead within ten minutes when André Silva found the back of the net in the 9th minute. The second goal came just three minutes later when Benjamin Henrichs found the bottom left corner (12’) to double the lead. RBL continued to dominate proceedings in the first half and had a number of shooting opportunities. Dani Olmo turned the ball home from close range after a set piece but the offside flag went up (22’), but Leipzig had their third goal when Silva doubled his tally in the 44th minute. Timo Werner, on his return to the starting XI, scored the final goal of the half to make it 4-0 at the break after some good work from Olmo (45+2’).

Schalke responded positively after the break and scored the first goal of the second half when Soichiro Kozuki pulled one back in the 56th minute. The goal spurred Leipzig back into action and Dani Olmo added to his two assists with a fantastic chip from the edge of the area to make it 5-1 in the 83rd minute. Substitute Yussuf Poulsen scored the final goal of the game in the 89th minute with his first Bundesliga goal of the season.

7TH MINUTE: GOAL FOR RB LEIPZIG!

Leipzig win the ball in their own half and Laimer goes vertical quickly. Timo plays it back to Silva and draws the defender away giving him space. André uses the space to shoot from 18 metres and finds the bottom left corner. 0-1!

9TH MINUTE:

That was our first goal from our first shot! For André, it was his 54th goal in the Bundesliga and his second from outside the area.

Szoboszlai shoots from distance, but Schwolow parries and Schalke clear.

15TH MINUTE: GOAL FOR LEIPZIG!

Olmo has space thought the middle and finds Henrichs down the right. He gets into the area and hits a composed finish across the goalkeeper into the bottom left corner. 0-2!

19TH MINUTE:

Dani plays a ball in behind, where Laimer can shoot but Schwolow saves again. The rebound isn’t cleared properly and RBL win the ball and attack down the right. A ball to the back post finds Silva and Schwolow saves again. It’s all RBL so far.

22ND MINUTE:

After a corner from the left, Orban’s header reaches Olmo at the back post and out number 7 pokes home. However, the flag was up for offside and a VAR check confirms the decision. No goal.

30TH MINUTE:

Leipzig have dominated the play so far and have had 60% of possession.

41ST MINUTE:

Leipzig have recorded 6 shots compared to the home side’s 1. In the last few minutes, however, Schalke become more determined and have looked to adopt a more attacking approach.

44TH MINUTE: GOAL FOR RB LEIPZIG!

RBL attack down the left and the ball then reaches Laimer in the middle, who slots in Olmo. His shot is saved into a dangerous area by Schwolow and Silva is there to tap in from close range. 0-3.

Marco Rose’s side are not letting up at all! Szoboszlai switches the play from left to right, where Henrichs plays in Olmo. Olmo attacks the byline and finds Werner, who finishes from close range. 0-4!

HALF TIME:

A completely dominant half comes to an end in our first away game of 2023. A brace from André Silva and goals from Benjamin Henrichs and Timo Werner have us 4-0 ahead at the break.

Schalke get one back. Fray plays a ball behind the defence from the left-hand side and Kozuki is first to the ball. He takes a good touch to control the ball and finishes past Blaswich. 1-4.

The home side are much improved in the second half and have been a little dangerous. Frey has a shot deflected as they look for another.

RBL hit on the break and Laimer turns and drives forward before sending Silva into space with an outside-of-the-boot ball. He shoots from a narrow angle and Shcwolow saves, before Laimer’s rebound is blocked for a corner.

71ST MINUTE:

First change for Leipzig: Szobszlai comes off for Emil Forsberg.

Double change. Yussuf Poulsen and Amadou Haidara come on for Timo Werner and Konrad Laimer.

83RD MINUTE: GOAL FOR LEIPZIG!

Dani crowns his performance with a goal – and what a goal it is! A free kick from the left finds Olmo in space on the edge of the area and he takes a touch before producing a fine chip over the goalkeeper from outside the box! What a finish! 1-5!

89TH MINUTE: GOAL FOR LEIPZIG!

Poulsen! The substitute is sent in behind the defence down the left, cuts into the box, and curls a great right-footed shot across the goalkeeper and inside the far post. A great finish! 1-6.
