RB Leipzig were beaten 3-0 away to Borussia Mönchengladbach on matchday 7. The hosts punished Leipzig’s mistakes and were clinical in front of goal.
Despite a decent start by RBL, Gladbach took the lead after 11 minutes. Jonas Hofmann smashed home after Péter Gulácsi could only parry Marcus Thuram’s header. We were well in the game and searching for an equaliser before David Raum lost the ball on the halfway line and Borussia initiated a perfect counter-attack. Thuram played in Hofmann and he got his second of the night (35’).
Leipzig had decent chances at the start of the second half through Silva and Dominik Szoboszlai, however the home team killed the game off effectively when Ramy Bensebaini dinked a shot over Gulácsi (53’). Our side continued to fight, but couldn’t get a goal back and Gladbach even had a few chances to score again from more counter-attacks.

First half highlights:
We begin with four changes from the game in Madrid in midweek. Joško Gvardiol, Benjamin Henrichs, Kevin Kampl and André Silva replace Abdou Diallo, Mohamed Simakan, Xaver Schlager and Timo Werner in the starting XI.
The first attack for RBL. Christopher Nkunku has lots of space down the left, but can’t find anyone with his cross.
The hosts have their first opportunity. Thuram gets down the left-hand side and gives it to Lars Stindl, who has his shot blocked.
Great save! Péter Gulácsi tips Nico Elvedi’s header over the bar from a corner with his fingertips.
11th minute, goal for Gladbach:
A Scally cross finds Thuram, his header is only parried by Gulácsi and Jonas Hofmann smashes home the rebound.
A great chance for an immediate response. David Raum’s free-kick picks out the unmarked Joško Gvardiol at the far post, however he can only head straight at Yann Sommer.
André Silva runs on to a through ball. Elvedi manages to beat him to it at the last moment.
Chaos in the Gladbach box! The ball evades both Sommer and Nkunku and it eventually ends up at Silva. He fires his left-footed shot well wide.
Our number 19 is involved again. His looping header is touched over the bar by Sommer and we get our first corner.
A great ball for Christo to run on to. He looks to find Silva at the back post, but his ball is excellently cut out by Elvedi.
35th minute, goal for Gladbach:
Gladbach clinically punish a mistake from Raum. Thuram slips in Hofmann and he slots it past Gulácsi.
Hofmann comes close to his hat-trick, firing one just wide from 25 yards out.
It’s not been good enough so far from Leipzig. Gladbach are getting stuck in and using their pace well. We need to improve our tackling in the second half. It’s not over yet!
Second half highlights:
Leipzig have made two changes for the second half. Timo Werner and Xaver Schlager have replaced Emil Forsberg and Amadou Haidara.
A promising start to the second half for RBL! Raum’s delivery is headed towards goal by Silva. It’s too central though, and Sommer has no issues with it.
Another decent chance. Szoboszlai’s shot on his right is kept out by Sommer in the box.
Gladbach are extremely dangerous on the break tonight. In a similar move to their second goal, Hofmann is clean through again, however Gulácsi can save this attempt.
52nd minute, goal for Gladbach:
Gladbach make it 3-0. The ball comes to Lars Stindl outside the box following a corner and he crosses it back into the danger zone. Ramy Bensebaini chests it down and then dinks it over Gulácsi.
Koné wins the ball from Schlager and passes for Thuram. Gvardiol gets in front to clear the danger. We’re too open.
Hofmann sprints down the right and causes more trouble for Leipzig.
Wednesday’s game in Madrid has obviously taken a lot out of the lads. Gladbach are comfortable here.
Weigl cuts open our defence with a pass, Stindl is free and plays it to Thuram. He goes down in the box after a challenge by Raum, though nothing is given.
Another quick move sees Hofmann one-on-one against Gulácsi yet again. The Hungarian saves the shot with his legs.
It’s all over. A night to forget.
