RBL defeat Mainz 4-1

André Silva scores his first brace for Leipzig, Nkunku lights up the second half off the bench

RB Leipzig defeated 1. FSV Mainz 05 4-1 on Matchday 18 of the Bundesliga. André Silva (21’, 61’), Dominik Szoboszlai (47’) and Christopher Nkunku (58’) were on the scoresheet for the Red Bulls, while Jae-Sung Lee made it 2-1 (57’). Alexander Hack was shown an early red card for handball in the 19th minute.

Mainz were aggressive in the opening phases and made it difficult for RBL to get into the attacking third. However, the Red Bulls press paid off early on. In the 19th minute, Szoboszlai won possession from Mainz’s Hack in a dangerous position. Moments later, with the goalkeeper off his line, Hack blocked Szoboszlai’s goal-bound show with his upper arm and was shown a straight red card (19’). Silva stepped up and converted to give Domenico Tedesco’s side the lead. RBL were comfortable with a player and goal advantaged and went into the break 1-0 ahead.

Christopher Nkunku was introduced for Yussuf Poulsen for the second half. After setting up Szoboszlai's goal to make it 2-0 (47’), the forward scored himself to replenish the two-goal lead in the 58th minute, within sixty seconds of Lee pulling one back for the visitors. Not content with a goal and assist, Nkunku didn’t stop there and provided the assist for Silva's second goal to increase the lead to 4-1 (61’). With a win to begin the new year, RBL overtook Bo Svensson's team in the league table and narrowed the gap to the Champions League places to just five points.
