Champions League! RBL secure UCL for the 5th time
1-1 draw in Bielefeld sees RB Leipzig qualify for the UEFA Champions League | A fifth UCL appearance in 6 Bundesliga seasons for RBL
Back in the UEFA Champions League! Matchday 34 of the Bundesliga saw RB Leipzig secure 4th place in the table with a 1-1 draw away to Arminia Bielefeld and qualify for Europe’s top club competition once again.
The result means we continue our run of qualifying for continental cup competitions in every season we have played in the Bundesliga. Following UCL qualifications in 2017, 2019, 2020 and 2021, RBL have qualified for Europe’s top table for the fifth time and the fourth time in a row.
Second half of the season secures UCL football
The team has hunted down the top four places fantastically in the second half of the season, Starting the Rückrunde with a six point gap to the top four. Domenico Tedesco has led the team to success, though. With 11 wins and three draws (and just three defeats), RB Leipzig were the strongest team in the second half of the 2021/22 season, and achieved their best-ever Rückrunde.
With five wins from Tedesco’s first eight games in charge, we reached fourth position on matchday 22. After that, we gave up the position for just two weeks in total (after matchdays 25 and 32), and even jumped into third following our 1-0 win in Leverkusen on matchday 30.
SC Freiburg, who were seven points ahead of RB Leipzig over the winter break, were our closest challengers to fourth place, but we turned that deficit into a three-point advantage over the second half of the season, overtaking SC and finishing fourth.
