Olympics: Dani Olmo reaches final!
Olympic Games underway in Tokyo | Dani Olmo’s Spain beat Japan in extra time to set up final against Brazil | Benjamin Henrichs exits at the group stage | All the information on the 2021 Olympic football tournament
The Games are underway in Japan! The Olympic Games in Tokyo have begun, albeit a year later than originally planned due to the coronavirus pandemic. Japan’s capital is hosting the Olympics for the second time since 1964. This time, Leipzig’s Dani Olmo and Benjamin Henrichs are involved.
While Benny Henrichs’ Germany sadly headed home after the group stage, Dani Olmo and Spain have reached the final and will be in action against Brazil on Saturday.
Tournament
Normally teams use players under the age of 23 for the Olympics, with three overage players allowed. However, due to the tournament being delayed because of the pandemic, FIFA have now permitted players to play who were born after 31st December 1996.
The 16 teams have been split up into four groups of four. The top two teams in each group will reach the quarterfinals to be played on 31st July. The semi-finals are then scheduled for 3rd August ahead of the third-place play-off (6th August) and the final (7th August). All events will be played behind closed doors due to the Covid-19 restrictions.
