Oliver Mintzlaff, chairman of the supervisory board at RB Leipzig:

  • “We’re really pleased to be able to announce Marcel Schäfer as our new Managing Director for Sport. We’re convinced that his spirit, experience and expertise will make him a good fit for RB Leipzig

Our club has a clear philosophy and always wants to improve. We have ambitious targets and believe that Marcel and his ideas can contribute to us continuing to have success.”

Johann Plenge, RB Leipzig CEO:

  • “We saw in our discussions with Marcel that he brings not only his skills and his contacts, but also a desire to drive RB Leipzig forward next season and beyond. His philosophy matches RB Leipzig perfectly. He followed similar ideals in Wolfsburg, where he signed a lot of young players and helped to develop them.

Marcel will also have a very ambitious group alongside him in Sporting Director Rouven Schröder and his team, who have done a great job over the past weeks and months. We’re really looking forward to getting the new season started together!”

Marcel Schäfer, RB Leipzig Managing Director for Sport, starting on August 1st:

  • RB Leipzig have been on a great journey. They’ve come a long way over the past few years and, in addition to the domestic trophies, have become a real force on the international stage.

Our mutual aim is to help this great club grow even more, be as successful as possible and be one of the top destinations for the best young talents in Europe. I’m really looking forward to being able to help write the next chapter in the incredible story of RB Leipzig.”

Marcel Schäfer was VfL Wolfsburg’s sporting director from 1st July 2018 until 31st January 2023, before taking on the role of managing director for sport, which he remained in until 10th April 2024. As a player, the left-back played 312 games for the Wolves between 2007 and 2017, winning the Bundesliga in 2009 and the DFB-Pokal and DFL-Supercup in 2015. Schäfer also won eight caps for Germany.
