"Pitch of the Year“: The DFL Awards the Turf in the Red Bull Arena
RB Leipzig finishes ahead of Bayer 04 Leverkusen and FC Bayern Munich
The best pitch in the league!
The German Football League (DFL) applauded the quality of the pitch in the Red Bull Arena throughout RB Leipzig's home matches. Now it's official: The best pitch in the Bundesliga's 2023/24 season was in Leipzig.
This means we receive our first ever "Pitch of the Year" Award. Bayer 04 Leverkusen's BayArena finished second and FC Bayern Munich's Allianz Arena, third.
The evaluation process
The assessment is done by a jury, made up of three members of the DFL Expert's Commission in charge of ensuring the quality of the turf in the Bundesliga and the Bundesliga 2. The members of the jury also belong to the German Lawn Society.
The award's background
The "Pitch of the Year" award has been handed out since the 2013/14 season by the DFL to promote a high standard of quality in the upkeep of Germany's two biggest football divisions' pitches. The requirements for the quality of the lawns and the properties of the playing fields is constantly increasing. With this award, the DFL supports the continuous development of the quality of stadium pitches.
The evaluation system
The appraisal for the award is based on three areas: The "sport rating system", the "jury's measurement verification" that takes place at the stadium itself, and the seasonal measurements from the "self-assessment of the stadium's green keeping". The "sport rating system" takes into account the post-match opinion on the quality of the pitch of the different team captains and referees.
