"We mean business!"
Head coach Marco Rose and goal scorers Timo Werner, Benjamin Henrichs and Dani Olmo give their thoughts on the 6-1 win over Schalke 04.
Marco Rose:
- "The first half was fantastic – on the ball, off the ball and in transition. Going into the break 4-0 up, we knew that Schalke would make some changes and therefore we had a few problems in the second half and didn’t execute our plan as well as we wanted. We wanted the clean sheet and we didn’t manage it.
After that we managed to build on the first half and scored two really nice goals. It was a big result and I wish Reisi (Thomas Reis) all the best for the rest of the season. There is still a lot there for Schalke."
Timo Werner:
- "We have a lot of confidence in our abilities. We wanted to pick up on what was a good performance against Bayern. The head coach warned us ahead of the game that it could be a tough fixture and we saw that in the second half. But on the whole, it was a good day for us.
It felt really good to start a game again. I’m pleased that I’m playing again and celebrating the wins with the team again.
On Friday we’re facing another team who are in a relegation battle. It will be another tough game."
Benjamin Henrichs:
- "I’m feeling good and I wanted to show that on the pitch. I want to play as much as possible and help the team. I was in a lot of space for my goal and Dani played it brilliantly. It wasn’t an easy game even though they’re bottom of the table. Schalke are fighting and working hard. We wanted to resist that and did well, especially in the first half. It’s a performance we can build on.
We’re now unbeaten in ten games and that shows the quality we have. It’s also a message to the other teams that we mean business. We have to continue like this in the second half of the season."
Dani Olmo:
- "I’m really happy with the win. We performed brilliantly as a team, from the first to the last minute. We played really well and did a lot of things that made it very difficult for Schalke. They started the second half well and pressed higher, but after we conceded we were more focused and didn’t allow them anything. We can be really pleased.
We got better as the first half of the season went on. Our performances were improving and we were consistently picking up points. We have to continue like that. Everyone in the team is important; we all understand each other and we have a great team mentality.
When I got the ball for my goal, I just saw that the Schalke goalkeeper was too far off his line. I thought I could chip the ball in at the far post; I’m glad it came off."
