Marco Rose appointed new head coach of RB Leipzig
45-year-old is club’s new head coach with immediate effect | Leipzig-born coach signs a contract until 2024 | Alexander Zickler, Marco Kurth and Frank Geideck his new assistants
Marco Rose has been appointed as the new head coach of RB Leipzig and has signed a two-year contract valid until June 2024. The 45-year-old replaces Domenico Tedesco, who departed the club on Wednesday, 7th September.
Rose will be presented to the media today at 10:00 CEST and will take charge of his first training session this afternoon.
Former professionals Alexander Zickler, Frank Geideck and Marco Kurth will be Rose’s assistants. The rest of his coaching team will contain goalkeeping coach Frederik Gößling, plus fitness coaches Ruwen Faller, Kai Kraft and Daniel Behlau.
Marco Rose profile:
Marco Rose was born in Leipzig in 1976 and grew up in our city. He played for Rotation Leipzig and 1. FC Lokomotive Leipzig in his youth, with the latter becoming VfB Leipzig after the reunification in 1991. He made it to VfB’s first team and made his professional debut in the 2. Bundesliga in 1997.
The defender then spent two years at Hannover 96 in the Bundesliga. He moved back to the second division to play for 1. FSV Mainz 05 (initially for two years on loan). He was there until 2010 and was part of the team that won promotion to the Bundesliga in 2004. Overall, Rose played 65 Bundesliga games for the Zerofivers, scoring three goals.
Rose began his coaching career in summer 2011 following his retirement. His first role was an assistant in Mainz’s academy, with his first job as head coach coming in 2012 at fourth-tier 1. FC Lokomotive Leipzig, where he twice came up against RB Leipzig in the league (3-1 loss, 0-0).
The German worked for FC Red Bull Salzburg’s academy from 2013 to 2017, winning the UEFA Youth League with their U19s in 2017.
Rose became head coach of Salzburg’s first team for two seasons from July 2017. He went on to win the title in 2018 and the double in Austria a year later. On top of that, his side made the semi-finals of the UEFA Europa League in 2017/18. He was subsequently named as Austria’s Coach of the Year in 2018.
His first job in the Bundesliga was as Borussia Mönchengladbach’s head coach. The Foals finished fourth in his first season and qualified for the UEFA Champions League. They then reached the last 16 in Europe’s premier cup competition the following season. Rose moved to Dortmund after two years with Gladbach. Despite finishing second last season, he departed the club in May 2022.

The new assistant coaches:
Alexander Zickler (48) has already worked as Rose’s assistant during his time at Red Bull Salzburg’s academy (2013 to 2014), their first team (2017 to 2019), Borussia Mönchengladbach (2019 to 2021) and Borussia Dortmund (2021 to 2022). Zickler won 12 caps for Germany as a player and scored two goals. He played 380 times for FC Bayern, winning the German title seven times and the UEFA Champions League in 2001.
Frank Geideck (55) has arrived from Borussia Mönchengladbach, where he was assistant coach since 2009. He worked together there with Rose from 2019 to 2021. As a player, Geideck played 172 times for his hometown club Arminia Bielefeld.
Marco Kurth (44) returns to the club after a long spell here already. He was an academy coach at RB Leipzig from 2017 to summer 2021, before moving up to become an assistant in the first team up until the winter break of last season. As a player, Kurth had spells with FC Erzgebirge Aue (226 games) and FC Energie Cottbus (65 games, including 8 in the Bundesliga).
