RB Leipzig defeated 2-1 by Union Berlin
RBL lose away to Union Berlin on Bundesliga matchday 3 | Home side with two counter-attacking goals in the first half | Late Willi Orbán goal not enough
Domenico Tedesco made four changes to the side, handing a Bundesliga debut to Janis Blaswich who replaced injured captain Péter Gulácsi. The Red Bulls applied the pressure early on at the Stadion an der Alten Försterei and had the first big chance of the game through Timo Werner, but the forward’s lob bounced back off the post (19’).
The hosts turned the game out of nowhere with two quickfire goals on the counter attack. Firstly Sheraldo Becker assisted Jordan Siebatcheu, who fired in from the edge of the area (32’).Six minutes later, the hosts had doubled their lead, with the attacking duo doing things the other way round. This time it was Becker who scored after Siebatcheu's assist (38’) to send Union into the break with a two-goal lead.
RB continued to dominate the play in the second half. Marcel Halstenberg’s shot was cleared on the line (68’) after a corner, before the ball was finally in the back of the net. Another David Raum corner found the head of Willi Orbán who rose the highest to head past Rönnow in goal (83’). Shortly before full time, Amadou Haidara’s shot was deflected narrowly wide and Leipzig threw everything they had into finding an equaliser (89’). Unfortunately it wasn’t to be and the Red Bulls head back to Leipzig with a 2-1 defeat.

First half highlights

Olmo looks to find Werner in the area, but there’s a bit too much on the pass.
Kampl tries an effort from the edge of the area but it’s blocked by a defender.
Werner goes down in the penalty area after Trimmel stands on the back of his ankle. That looked a painful one and the striker needs some treatment. No penalty is the call!
Union threaten at the other end but Simakan blocks Ryerson’s shot a few metres in front of the line.
Henrichs plays Werner in behind the line and he lobs Rönnow from a narrow angle, but the post denies him.
Raum delivers a corner intot he area and Orbán heads goalwards but it’s deflected wide.
32nd minute, goal for Union Berlin:
The hosts take the lead. Becker finds Siebatcheu on the counter attack and the forward slots home from around 16 metres out.
Nkunku puts a free kick towards the back post but Orbán can’t quite get there.
38th minute: Goal for Union Berlin:
Another Union counter attack results in a goal for the hosts. This time, it’s Siebatcheu who finds Becker. He gets into the area, cuts inside onto his left foot before beating Blaswich with his shot. 2-0.
Despite coming out on top in a number of areas, RBL are down at the break with Union clinical on two rapid counter attacks!
Second half highlights
The second half is underway, with Halstenberg on for Gvardiol.
Laimer gets down the right and crosses into the area, but the ball’s a bit too high and Nkunku can’t get over it to hit the target with his header.
Leipzig have had 3 shots on target in the second half so far, with the hosts yet to find the target since the break.
Siebatcheu fires wide of the bottom left corner from around 10 metres.
The game’s lost its flow and there have been a lot of interruptions. Union substitute Behrens is shown a yellow card for a foul on Simakan.
Nearly! Halstenberg shoots after a corner, but the ball is cleared off the line.
Time is ticking away but the home side are defending with everyone behind the ball, limiting the RBL chances.

YES! A goal back! Raum delivers a corner kick from the left side, Orbán rises the highest and heads into the back of the net!
After some intense RBL pressure, Haidara shoots from just outside the area. The deflected shot flies narrowly wide of the goal.
Full time in Berlin. RBL head home with a 2-1 defeat.
