Christo is staying! Last season’s success proves that Christopher Nkunku feels very at home in Leipzig. Now, he wants to build on the achievements from last year and improve even more.
In an interview with rbleipzig.com, the 24-year-old spoke about his contract extension and his goals for the new season.
Christo, congratulations on the contract extension! We can’t wait to tackle the new season with you. You had a fantastic season last year and won your first major title with RB Leipzig. What was the reason you decided to extend your contract?
I had many long talks with Oliver Mintzlaff. Right from the start, he told me that I’m a key part of the team, which showed how much faith they have in me.
I’m very happy in Leipzig! I can feel that the team are hungry for more after winning our first title, and that we want to win more. That combination was what convinced me to extend my contract here.
What goals have you set for the new season?
I want to have a successful season with the team, and to top our results from last season. I want a season after which we can all be proud of ourselves and where we wouldn’t change anything.
We want to get off to a better start this year. We have the confidence in ourselves to do that. After all, we know now how we can be successful on the pitch.
How would you rate the team ahead of the new season?
We have a really strong team here. Everyone tries to motivate each other to improve. We have the chance to build on last season and to win more titles. You can feel that spirit within the team. We want to take our chances to win a title in every competition.
I'm happy to be part of such a strong team spirit.
What influence did your French teammates have on your decision to stay?
Of course every one of them is also a reason why I’m staying. They all play an important role in making me feel at home here and are a reason why I played such a strong season.
It’s not just my friends from France. Everyone at the club tries to support each other. I’m happy to be part of this strong team spirit.
Training will resume at Cottaweg on 5th July. What plans do you have for your holiday until then?
The most important thing for me is to see my family in France and to spend time with them. I also have a few days of holiday coming up. It’s important to take a break as well. As soon as the new season starts, my focus will be back on football.
Of course I will also be preparing myself even before pre-season begins in order to be ready for everything to start up again in early July.
