Macthday 3 of the 2021/22 Bundesliga season | RB Leipzig lose 1-0 to VfL Wolfsburg | Jerome Roussillon scores the winning goal (52') | 700 RBL fans in away end
Defeat in Wolfsburg. After a hard-fought 90 minutes, the Red Bulls suffered a 1-0 defeat at the hands of VfL Wolfsburg. Jerome Roussilon scored the only goal of the game in the 52nd minute.
The game started with some promise. In the opening minutes, the Red Bulls, who were unchanged from the 4-0 win over Stuttgart, controlled the play, before the game developed into an open fight. The first significant chances came shortly before the end of the first half: Christopher Nkunku hit an effort at Koen Casteels (37’), before Andre Silva was also denied by the Belgian goalkeeper with a header (39’) and Mohamed Simakan’s rebound went over the bar to see the half end goalless.
The home side enjoyed the better start after the break and opened the scoring in the 52nd minute through Jerome Roussilon. As the Red Bulls looked to level the game, they were the victim of Wolfsburg counter attacks. Attacker Wout Weghorst had the chance to quickly double the lead for his side but shot over the bar one-on-one with Peter Gulacsi (59’). The missed chance went unpunished, however, as efforts from Emil Forsberg (64’, 90+2’) and Willi Orban (78’) didn’t find the back of the net. As a result, the Red Bulls were made to travel home empty handed.
