The Red Bulls have only conceded one goal in five cup games this season, whereas our final opponents have already conceded five in both normal time and extra time.

In 1935, the then record league champions FC Nürnberg won the first ever edition of the Tschammerpokal, the predecessor to the DFB-Pokal. The first ever winners of the cup as we now know it were Rot-Weiss Essen, who beat Alemannia Aachen 2-1 in the 1953 final. They were led by legend Helmut Rahn, the scorer of the winning goal in the 1954 World Cup final.

The first winners of the league and cup double were Schalke 04 in 1937. The remained the only team to have achieved this feat for over three decades, until FC Bayern won both the Bundesliga and the DFB-Pokal in the 1968/69 season.

The first side to successfully defend the cup was Dynamo Dresden in 1941, led by striker Helmut Schön. Schön went on to lift the 1972 European Championship and the 1974 World Cup as Germany manager. Karlsruher SC were the first club to defend the DFB-Pokal (as we now know it) back in 1956.

This will be the Red Bull’s third final appearance, all of which have come in the last four years. SC Freiburg have reached the final for the first time in their history.

Christopher Nkunku has been our most prolific player in the DFB-Pokal this season with three goals. The Frenchman is closely followed by Dominik Szoboszlai and André Silva, who have two goals each. Hamburg’s Robert Glatzel is this season’s top scorer with five goals. Christo also has three assists in this year’s Pokal, the most of any RBL player, and is ahead of Angelino and André, who both have two. Freiburg’s Lucas Höler has the most assists in this year’s competition with five.

Our goalkeeper and captain Péter Gulácsi has three clean sheets to his name in the DFB-Pokal this season, the most of any keeper in this year’s completion. Sport Club’s Mark Flekken has one clean sheet so far.

The coaches with the most Pokal wins are Karl-Heinz Feldkamp, Ottmar Hitzfeld, Udo Lattek, Otto Rehhagel, Thomas Schaaf and Hennes Weiswiler, all with three wins.

The club that has defended the cup on the most occasions is FC Bayern. The Bavarians have successfully defended the Pokal four times. Eight teams have defended the trophy, but no one other than Bayern has defended it more than once.

Our talent Sidney Raebiger is the youngest player to feature in the Pokal this season. The youngster was only 16 years, 3 months and 21 days old when he came on in the first round against SV Sandhausen. Only seven players were younger when they made their debut in the tournament.

The trophy is bejeweled with 18 nephrite crystals, twelve tourmaline minerals and twelve mountain crystals. The DFB-Pokal logo on the trophy is made from green nephrite.

Bayern have lifted the trophy a record 20 times and are well ahead of second-placed Werder Bremen who have won six.

The final will take place in Berlin for the 44th time. Before the cup final moved to the capital city in 1985, it took place all over the country. The Niedersachsenstadion in Hannover has hosted the final eight times, the second most after the Olympiastadion in Berlin.
