"We were very naive"
Head coach Domenico Tedesco, captain Peter Gulácsi and Willi Orban react to the 2-0 defeat to Arminia Bielefeld
Domenico Tedesco:
- "We're obviously very disappointed. We couldn't create as many chances as we did against Augsburg. We were very sloppy in the final third, and after going behind, were naive and lost our structure. In the first half there were moments where everything went as planned, and we managed to attack the spaces that we were looking for. We also didn’t allow any counter chances to the opposition.
Against Gladbach, we played well and scored four goals. Against Augsburg, we could have scored four goals and played well. Today we had few goalscoring chances, there could have been more in it for us. In the last three games, we’ve played four halves that were either good or very good. We’ll take that to build on. We know that we have a lot of work ahead of us and not much time to do so.
Chance conversion is a topic. We have to look at the final third: What are we doing there? How are we playing there? Which areas do we want to play in? How many players are in the box? How are we crossing? There are a lot of things we need to discuss to get to know the team better."
Péter Gulácsi
- "Our first half was good, even though we didn't have many chances. We weren't as effective as we wanted to be, but overall we were dominant. Bielefeld are always compact in their defence and that makes it hard to find spaces. Our plan was to carry on in the same way for the second half. When we went behind, it obviously became more difficult. However, we should have won this game. In our situation, it's very disappointing.
The first goal came from a counter attack. We lost the ball in a dangerous area and were unable to win it back with our pressing. The second goal also came from us losing possession. It’s very frustrating. We controlled the game and also had some chances. But coming back from 2-0 down is incredibly difficult.
There have been many games in this first half of the season that we should have taken more from. Today was one of those. Football is like that sometimes. Our errors were punished. It is very disappointing that we have 22 points. We have to make sure that we have a strong second half of the season. Our situation isn't an easy one but we have to clear our heads over the winter break and come back strongly."
Willi Orban:
- "Our structure was in order in the first half, but we lost it at times in the second. We played in the areas that we wanted to against Bielefeld. They defended well and used their moments. We weren’t very dangerous and lacked power going forward. We weren’t direct enough.
Our first half of the season has been sobering. 22 points is obviously not the total that we set out for or wanted. We have to analyse it all now. We’ve had a new coach for a week and a half who has introduced a few new things, but who still has a lot of work to do with us. We have to take a few days to recover, take responsibility and question ourselves whether we’ve played to our maximum. We have an important training week at the beginning of January and have to make sure that we work hard to work off the load we’re carrying."
