A frustrating evening for RB Leipzig. On Matchday 2 of the UEFA Champions League Group stage, RBL suffered a 2-1 defeat against Belgian champions Club Brugge.
The game started well for Jesse Marsch’s side when Christopher Nkunku found the back of the net after five mintues. After a dominant opening phase, the visitors found a response and tested captain Péter Gulácsi for the first time on eleven minutes through Hans Vanaken. Brugge finally had the right answer when Vanaken got the better of Gulácsi from close range to level the game (22’).
Brugge kept the pressure on and got their reward, taking the lead shortly before half time. Mats Rits finished after a ball back across the area from Vanaken (40’) to give his side a 2-1 lead at the break.
RBL enjoyed much more ball possession and shots in the second half but were unable to turn the game in their favour. A couple of penalty shouts ultimately came to nothing and some stops from goalkeeper Simon Mignolet ensured a 2-1 win for the visitors from Belgium.
