Huge win over Hertha BSC! RB Leipzig put on a show for their fans at the sold-out Red Bull Arena. Christopher Nkunku was particularly impressive, scoring two goals and recording two assists. The scoreline was a justified reward for a strong overall team performance.
RBL showed a determined performance from the beginning and took the lead early on thanks to goals from Christopher Nkunku (16’) and Yussuf Poulsen (23’). Nordi Mukiele scored with the final shot of the first half to hand the Bulls a 3-0 lead at the break. The scoreline could have been higher after the opening 45 minutes, Emil Forsberg being denied by the crossbar (34’) and Lukas Klostermann’s goal was ruled out for offside by VAR (35’).
The second half was a similar story for Jesse Marsch’s goal-hungry side. Emil Forsberg added to the advantage from the penalty spot (60’), before man of the match Nkunku fired in a free kick into the top right-hand corner on 70 minutes. After some strong work from substitute Brian Brobbey, Amadou Haidara found the bottom left corner from the edge of the area (77’) to round off a 6-0 win and a fine all-round performance for the Red Bulls.

A look into the changing rooms
First half highlights:
1st minute: What a wild opening! Hertha goalkeeper Alexander Schwolow races out of his goal but doesn’t clear correctly. The ball lands at the feet of Emil Forsberg, who attempts a strike from distance. Dardai clears with an open goal behind him.
10th minute: A strong start from RBL! Forsberg involved again, this time testing Schwolow from a narrow angle. The goalkeeper saves with his fingertips.
12th minute: Leipzig dominate, Hertha counter! Ekkelenkamp has a lot of space on the left but his pass to Davie Selke isn’t accurate enough.
15th minute: GOOOALL for RBL! Lukas Klostermann plays a nice ball through the middle, that Yussuf Poulsen allows the run through his legs. The dummy creates space in behind for Nkunku, who dinks the ball perfectly over Schwolow.
18th minute: Almost the second! Poulsen with a flying header attempt at the back post, but the ball is just a few inches too far away.
23rd minute: YESSS!! 2-0! Another beautifully-worked goal. Christo gets onto a fantastic ball in behind from Haidara, before remaining calm and squaring to Yussuf Poulsen, who simply finishes from close range.
29th minute: Another great chance. Nkunku is in behind again and bears down on goal, but this time shoots straight at Schwolow.
34th minute: Crossbar! It’s Forsberg who strikes and beats the Hertha keeper, but his shot is a few centimetres too high and strikes the woodwork.
35th minute: This time it’s 3-0… or not. Angelino’s deep free kick causes trouble in the area. Poulsen suffers a strong challenge, then Klostermann manages to bundle the ball home in a challenge with Schwolow. After all of the commotion, a VAR review reveals an offside and the goal doesn’t stand.
45+1st minute: After showing nothing for long stretches, there are finally signs of life for Hertha. Serdar has the ball on the left and looks for the far corner, but misses the target by some way.
45+3rd minute: NORDI!! 3-0! Angelino again delivers another dangerous free kick, which is met at the back post by Mukiele. Our fullback makes a good connection and places into the bottom left corner.
Second half highlights:
50th minute: Picking up where we left off before half time! Christo bombs down the right again, making light work of Marvin Plattenhardt, before hitting his powerful effort slightly over the bar.
59th minute: Penalty for RBL! Yussi links up with Nkunku again, and our number 18 is brought fown in the area. Referee Stegemann points to the spot…
60th minute: … and Emil Forsberg makes no mistake! 4-0 on the hour mark!
70th minute: GOAL!! Christopher Nkunku, take a bow! The Frenchman has been unplayable today and caps his performance with a wonderful free kick from the edge of the area after substitute André Silva was brought down.
74th minute: Standing ovation for Christo, as he’s replaced by Benny Henrichs.
77th minute: Incredible!! 6-0 TO LEIPZIG! Brian Brobbey enforces himself, showing some strong physical dominance. The substitute then plays back to Amadou Haidara before making more space for the return ball. Doudou sees a chance to shoot and fires a low drive into the bottom left corner.
81st minute: Willi Orban rises highest at a corner and heads towards goal, but Schwolow saves and holds.
90th minute: Hertha’s substitute Piatek looks for a consolation, but can’t find a way past Pete from distance.
