3-2 defeat to PSG despite good performance
3-2 defeat on UEFA Champions League Matchday 3 despite good performance | Kylian Mbappe gives PSG early lead | André Silva and Nordi Mukiele turn the game with strikes either side of half time either| Lionel Messi answers back with brace
No reward for a great performance. RB Leipzig suffered a narrow 3-2 defeat at the hands of Paris Saint-Germain. The Red Bulls started the game well and had good chances to take the lead through Konrad Laimer (3’) and André Silva (6’). Unfortunately, the hosts took the lead with their first chance on the counter, Julian Draxler finding Kylian Mbappé who found the bottom left corner from around 18 metres (9’).
After that, PSG enjoyed more possession, but it was RBL who looked dangerous. André Silva hit the post (27’), before equalising after a fine cross from Angeliño (28’). Christopher Nkunku saw an effort just miss wide to the the left of the post (42’) and the two sides headed into half time with a goal each.
Shortly after the break, the turnaround was complete and it was deserved. Angeliño provided his second assist of the night, with a perfect cross from the left. This time it was Nordi Mukiele who volleyed home (57’). Lionel Messi responded with PSG's second real chance of the game just ten minutes later (67’), before making it 3-2 shortly afterwards with an impressive Panenka penalty (74’). In injury time, Joško Gvardiol was penalised for a foul on Achraf Hakimi, but Mbappe shot over the bar from the spot (90’+4). The result was not affected and despite a strong performance, RBL had to make do with their third defeat in three UCL games.

Another RBL chance. Silva again! Picks up the ball and hits on the volley with his second touch, but his shot strikes the post and bounces wide.

YES! And that’s deserved. Nkunku spreads the play and finds Angeliño on the left. The full back plays a perfect low ball to the back post, where Silva finishes from close range.

While PSG have had 74% possession, the hosts have not had a goalscoring chance since taking the lead. All the chances are happening at the other end.
42nd minute:
Nkunku so close! A quick RBL attack and our number 18 turns Kimpembe on the edge of the area but his shot goes just wide of the bottom corner.
Half-time:
A strong performance from the Red Bulls. All square at the break, and Marsch’s men could be ahead with a little more luck. More of the same in the second half!
Second half highlights:
49th minute:
Free kick in a dangerous area for RBL. Nkunku tries his look and beats the wall but doesan’t dip down enough and goes over the bar. Nothing to trouble Navas.

Game turned! Angeliño with his second assist of the game. His cross is inch perfect and perfectly into the path of Mukiele, whose volley leaves Navas with no chance. 2-1!
65th minute:
Orban heads goalwards from a free kick from the left. Navas pulls off a good save, but the flag goes up for offside.
67th minute, goal for Paris Saint- Germain:
That’s tough to take. PSG convert what is only their second real chance on goal. Mbappe drives forward and cuts back to Messi in the middle. He shoots and Gulácsi gets a hand to the ball, pushing it onto the inside of the post. The ball rebounds across the goal line and Messi follows up for good measure.
73rd minute, penalty for Paris Saint- Germain:
That decision may be worth looking at again! Mbappe goes to the ground after Simakan places a hand on him. The referee points to the spot.
74th minute, goal for Paris Saint- Germain:
Messi with a cool finish from the spot. The Argentine simply dinks the ball down the middle as Gulácsi commits to his left. PSG regain the lead. 3-2.
77th minute:
Still time! Silva’s shot is blocked, then the impressive Konrad Laimer has a go. His shot is deflected over the bar and lands on the roof of the net.
85th minute:
Only five minutes left. RBL deserve at least a point here. Jesse Marsch has sent on Henrichs, Forsberg and Poulsen in search of an equaliser. Moriba and Gvardiol are also new in the game, having come on previously for Haidara and Klostermann respectively.
90+4th minute, penalty for Paris St. Germain:
A VAR check reveals a foul from Gvardiol's on Hakimi. The substitute was going to block a feinted cross, but caught the PSG man with his other leg on the follow through. Mbappe steps up but sends his shot high over the bar.
Full time:
The boys delivered a great performance but have to make do with a 3-2 defeat. PSG were clinical and although at least point would have been deserved, RBL head home empty handed.
