"We're in a spell that's new to us"
RB Leipzig lose 2-1 to 1. FC Union Berlin | Assistant coach Marco Kurth leads team in absence of Jesse Marsch and Achim Beierlorzer | Reaction from Kurth, Gulacsi and Mintzlaff
RB Leipzig suffered their third consecutive Bundesliga defeat as they lost 2-1 to 1. FC Union Berlin on Matchday 14 of the Bundesliga. With head coach Jesse Marsch and assistant Achim Beierlorzer still in home isolation, assistant coach Marco Kurth led the team from the sidelines.
MARCO KURTH:
"We knew that it would be a challenge and that Union are dangerous at set pieces. We were stung twice there. Our expectations are to win more games and therefore we're all disappointed. We also knew how passionately Union defend. They gave their all. We ourselves were not very dangerous at set pieces. What we showed was not enough. We have work to do. We have a lot of ambitions and the past years have been really successful. At the moment we're going though a phase that is unfamiliar to us, but that we can grow from."
PÉTER GULÁCSI:
"It was a hard-fought game. We didn't start well and conceded the opener quite early on. We knew what we were coming up against, that Union are a physical side at home who use the long ball. However, we just weren't ready. Our equaliser was a little bit lucky, even if the game was balanced for long stretches of each half. Our positioning wasn't good and we conceded a lot of counter attacks. We weren't alert at set pieces and that's how they won the game. The fans are disappointed and we too want a lot more from ourselves. 18 points from 14 games is not enough. We have higher expectations."
OLIVER MINTZLAFF:
"It was not what we were expecting after two losses. We came here to put things right and therefore I'm really disappointed. We didn't create any solutions. After a poor start, we found our way in the game. Then we came badly out of half time and lost almost every second ball, while finding no answer in attack. For our expectations, 13 points is not enough and not what we expect from the great squad that we have. The team had a duty today and what they showed was too little. Like this, we won't achieve our goals and that won't help us put things right. The club has only ever experienced success so far and therefore that's what we know. However, everyone who works in professional sport knows that things aren't always on the up. But that is no excuse for the current situation. It's a difficult phase but we won't bury our heads in the sand."
