Facts and stats on RBL vs. Bayern
RBL travel to Munich on matchday 21 | Two Leipzig regulars | Reunion with some familiar faces
A huge game for RB Leipzig! With the two-week international break coming to an end, RBL will travel to face the league-leaders on matchday 21. On Saturday night (5th February, 18:30 CET), RB Leipzig will face FC Bayern München for the 14th time. In addition to 11 Bundesliga games, the two clubs have also faced off on two occasions in the DFB-Pokal.
Pete and Yussi never missed a match
We can count two players in our ranks who have featured in all 13 previous meetings against Bayern: goalkeeper Peter Gulácsi and striker Yussuf Poulsen. Both started the very first encounter in December 2016, and both featured in the most recent meeting in the Bundesliga in September (4-1 defeat).
First meeting in 2016
Usually a clash between first and second
The overall head-to-head record could use some improvement from RBL’s point of view, with just one win, four draws and eight defeats. However, this fixture has delivered some spectacular matches in the past, with six of the previous 11 league encounters seeing the first placed team face off against second place.
Thrilling clashes
One match that will live long in the memory of Leipzig fans is the second encounter with Bayern in May 2017. After a back-and-forth 90 minutes, the game ended in a 5-4 victory for Bayern. It was a tough result for RBL, given that the team had thrown away a 4-2 lead in the final minutes of the match.
It was a similar story the last time the teams met in Munich: after RBL led 3-2, FCB were able to equalise in the closing minutes to secure a 3-3 draw.
Forsberg knows what’s needed against Bayern
Two players have proven themselves to be experts at facing Bayern in recent years, especially given that they are responsible for exactly half of our goals against Bayern: Timo Werner and Emil Forsberg. Both have scored three goals each against the record champions. Perfect timing then, that our Super Swede is back from injury just in time for this weekend!
Reunion with some familiar faces
The match in Munich will not only be a chance for our team to inch closer to the Champions League spots, but will also be a reunion with some former Bulls. Marcel Sabitzer, Dayot Upamecano, head coach Julian Nagelsmann and even Joshua Kimmich have all moved from Leipzig to FCB in past years, lending another storyline to what is sure to be a thrilling encounter this weekend.
